History
It is
believed that the first settlement in Icmeler, goes back to around 3000
B.C (About the same time as Marmaris). The town of Icmeler can be date
back to the same time period of Marmaris. It is located accrues from
Marmaris, on the northern part of the beautiful bay. A beach resort ,
Icmeler is set amidst stunning scenery at the foot of a range of
pine-covered mountains which
sweep down to form a huge cove. Since Icmeler is not to far from Marmaris
(about an hour's walk along the coast road, or only few minutes by car),
the town is also a good place to stay in for few nights, as well. Icmeler
has many new houses, hotels, motels and apart hotels' to go along with
it's old houses. Overall it is clean, spacious and well accommodating for
families.
Places
If
you are looking for a village-like feel, Icmeler with it's old preserved
village houses,
is the place. You can take a boat trip to
Cleopatra's Isle.
If you like to go into one of the old houses in the village, you can do so
at the Turkish
Tea House.
Fisherman's Old Village-
If you go on the mane road of Icmeler, away from the Marmaris road, you
come to a small bridge. After crossing the bridge, you make a right turn,
and you are in the old village. You'll be able to see men sitting around,
drinking tea or Raki (A spirit drink made out of anise seeds), play
Shes- Besh the famous
Turkish board game.
Cleopatra's Isle'-
This boat tour
is named so, because, according to legend it became a meeting place for
the famous queen Cleopatra and her lover Mark Anthony. Another legend,
tells us, that the queen used to bath in the nude at that cave, when one
day, a fisherman had passed by. The queen had ordered to capture him and
blind him, for seeing her in the nude.
Turkish Tea House-
After you go past the cloister of old houses in the village center, and
start going up the hill, you'll see on your right a sign pointing right to
Turkish Tea
House.
Usually, there's someone there who can show you around the place. You can
see there 18th & 19ht century artifacts.
Going out
Bars
along the sea front and in the surrounding streets provide live music
supplemented by the nightclubs, nothing boisterous as most of the
travelers head for Bodrum and Gumbet. A fair choice of restaurant in
Icmeler, many more in Marmaris ten minutes away by taxi or dolmus. The
beach is the main attraction for children and although the sand is gritty
the sea is warm and shallow. Close-by is a water park with suitable
attractions for youngsters.
